The practice of combining two people's names into a single portmanteau — "Brangelina" for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, "Kimye" for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West — became a media convention in celebrity journalism in the early 2000s. The format migrated into fandom culture, where "shipping" (supporting a romantic pairing, whether real or fictional) generated vast amounts of creative content and community activity.
The linguistic term for word blending is portmanteau — coined by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass. Standard portmanteau methods for couple names: taking the first syllable or two of one name and the last syllable or two of the other, reversing this combination, or finding a phonetically pleasing merge point. "Brangelina" takes "Bran" from Brad and "gelina" from Angelina. "Kimye" takes "Kim" and "ye" from Kanye.
The generator applies several of these combination patterns and returns the most pronounceable results — prioritising combinations where vowel-consonant transitions are smooth and the result does not inadvertently form an existing word with unintended meaning.
