How to calculate sand needed

Multiply length × width × depth to get the volume. Convert depth to the same unit as length and width first (inches → feet by dividing by 12; cm → metres by dividing by 100). Then multiply the volume by the density of sand to get weight. Loose dry sand weighs approximately 100 lb/ft³ (1,600 kg/m³). Wet or compacted sand is heavier — up to 130 lb/ft³.

For landscaping and paving projects, sand is typically sold by the ton or cubic yard. One cubic yard of sand weighs approximately 2,700 lbs (1.35 US tons).
