In Western astrology, three placements form the foundation of personality interpretation: the sun sign, the moon sign, and the rising sign (ascendant). Together, they are commonly referred to as "the big three." This tool calculates and interprets all three.
Your sun sign is determined by where the sun was in the zodiac at the time of your birth. Because the sun moves through the zodiac at approximately one degree per day, spending about 30 days in each sign, everyone born within a roughly four-week window shares the same sun sign. In astrology, the sun sign represents the core self, ego, and conscious identity. It is the sign most people know because it only requires knowing your birth date.
The moon moves through the zodiac much faster than the sun — completing a full cycle in approximately 27–29 days, spending about 2.5 days in each sign. The moon sign requires knowing your birth date and an approximate birth time to calculate accurately. In astrology, the moon sign represents emotional nature, instinctive responses, and the inner private self. Two people with the same sun sign can have very different emotional styles depending on their moon placement.
The rising sign (ascendant) requires knowing both birth time and birth location. It represents how a person presents to the world — the initial impression, the social persona, the outward style.
