In Western astrology, the rising sign (also called the ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of your birth. Because the Earth rotates approximately one degree every four minutes, the rising sign changes roughly every two hours — which means even people born on the same day in the same location can have very different rising signs depending on the time of birth.
In traditional and modern astrology, the rising sign is considered to describe the "mask" — how a person presents to the world and is initially perceived by others. The sun sign is understood as the core self; the moon sign as the emotional interior; the rising sign as the outward expression. Someone with a Scorpio sun but a Libra rising, for example, might be perceived as charming and agreeable in first impressions while being much more intense and private in close relationships.
The rising sign also determines the house system in a natal chart — it defines the "first house" and therefore the arrangement of all twelve houses, each associated with different life domains. This makes it structurally important in full chart interpretation.

For birth times close to a two-hour boundary — when the rising sign is about to change — the result may be off by one sign.
